To take a breath, to quiet the mind and move into a place of contemplation, that is the shift that awakens my creative spirit. Inspiration arises from immersing myself in nature and studying the intimate details of it, connecting to it. I have found entire hidden worlds while exploring and painting southern Delaware’s trails and waterways. On the surface you can see that my series of marsh landscapes captures the movement and texture of the clouds and the stillness of the water. Look closer and you can see that I am entranced by the depth and perspective of the tree and horizon lines, and capturing that on my canvas using tone of color. I work with only the buzzing of insects and occasional squawks of birds as my music.

To be completely zoned in and alive in the present moment is an essential part of my process. My body responds physically, loosening and lessening. Which translates to my painting, by using more gestural brushstrokes and a process of application and reduction, wiping away with a damp cloth. I have added the preliminary step of creating an underpainting using molding paste or plaster. I use my hands to sculpt the clouds and the trees and drag my fingers along the water to create ripples in reflection. I have evolved intensely since dedicating myself to my practice of connecting to my soul and painting from that space.

By taking away hard edges, I see more of what is. These marshes have been here long before us. These ancient trees have felt the hands of Native Americans peering around their trunks. I am inspired to keep studying them and feeling the spirit of the trees and marshes. I am confident that I can capture the vibrance and the tranquility through color, texture and intuitive painting from my being. My goal is to touch the light in each of us.
